Birdman, the most recent film from director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, Biutiful) is the story of washed-up comic book actor Riggan (Michael Keaton) trying to stage his own adaptation of a Raymond Carver story on Broadway. With him are his attorney/agent/best friend Jake (Zach Galifianakis), his assistant/daughter (Emma Stone), and theater star/antagonist Mike Shiner (Edward Norton). The action that plays out in the days leading up to the premiere of the play is presented seamlessly without edits (like Hitchcock‘s Rope, but funnier).
Critically lauded and heavy with awards, Birdman is poised to win at least a few of the 9 Oscars it’s nominated for. The cinematography is masterful thanks to Emmanuel Lubezki, who has worked with both Alfonso Cuarón and Terrence Malick. It also has what could be the most infectious soundtrack in the drum score by Antonio Sanchez. The entire cast is amazing, but stand-outs and nominations often go hand in hand. Michael Keaton is ferocious as a has-been with hopes of returning to the spotlight. Norton steals nearly every scene he’s in, and Emma Stone lives up to all the potential she’s shown in previous roles.
While the film has more charm and whimsy than Iñárritu’s previous films, it is no walk in the park as a viewer. The lack of visible edits gives the mind little time to rest. That being said, Birdman is probably Iñárritu’s most accessible film to date.
Recommended for every person who likes movies. Well, every grown person. It is R-rated. – [DVD] [Blu-Ray]
